Operations Associate

Our mission

“We need to massively scale up carbon dioxide removal,” said Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and lead author of the Planetary Boundaries framework, at the 2025 UN Climate Summit in New York. More specifically, carbon dioxide removal (CDR – the ‘net’ part of ‘net zero') must scale from near-zero today to billions of tonnes by 2050. The growth rate this implies is faster than any other climate technology is expected to achieve or has achieved in the past. This cannot be achieved without government policy, and the role Europe must play in creating that policy cannot be overstated. Carbon Gap, Europe’s leading CDR not-for-profit, exists to ensure Europe’s contribution is maximised.

A team of ~20 CDR policy experts based primarily between Brussels and London, we work closely with leading decision-makers right across Europe to design and shape the policies that are required to support CDR’s scale-up – from R&D funding to government purchasing programmes, and from national targets to standards and certification. Our work has been covered by publications including the Financial Times, Bloomberg, and the Wall Street Journal. Carbon Gap alumni have progressed to exciting roles in government, the private sector, and academia.

The role
Location: London (or Remote by exception)

This is a new role within Carbon Gap’s Operations function, reporting directly into the COO. It is a varied, far-reaching role, starting with day-to-day ownership of core operational processes, but with scope to (quickly) expand to encompass higher-level operational tasks and broader responsibility right across the organisation (see ‘Core responsibilities’ below). For the right candidate, it presents clear opportunities to progress quickly within the organisation.
Responsibilities
The role will initially centre around core operational and financial tasks, working closely with the COO to achieve operational excellence across areas such as:
  • Monthly financial processing and reporting
  • HR management and contracting
  • Annual financial audit support
  • Employee on- and off-boarding
  • Defining and implementing clear, effective operational and financial processes
Once clear and reliable ownership of core operational tasks has been established, responsibility would be expected to expand to areas such as:
  • Budgeting
  • Learning and development
  • Team offsites
  • Recruitment
  • IT strategy
  • Workplan structure, prioritisation, and resourcing
Beyond those outlined above, the right candidate could also expect opportunities to work across areas such as:
  • Fundraising and existing funder engagement
  • Leadership team support across strategy and org-critical decisions
  • Board meeting prep and Board engagement more generally
  • Partnerships
  • Special projects
This is a broad and varied role from the start, with scope to expand even further over time – both in terms of breadth (we’re looking for someone who will spot things that need doing/ fixing/ improving and take ownership of them, so the list above by definition cannot be exhaustive) and in terms of seniority (someone stepping into this role will have the opportunity to progress quickly within the organisation).
Your profile
  • You are an ambitious, early-career generalist with c.2-4 years of experience, ideally (but not strictly) in fields such as start-ups, consulting, and professional services
  • You’re biased to action and committed to delivering clear, tangible impact – something you’re able to demonstrate via your work experience to date
  • You have exceptional attention to detail and you’re able to hold your own work to very high standards
  • You’re able to operate autonomously in ambiguous contexts and make significant progress without requiring close management
  • You have experience owning processes (operational or otherwise) from end-to-end
  • You’re capable of (and you enjoy) context-switching between granular task delivery and higher-level thinking to spot opportunities to improve and create processes from scratch
  • You have ambitions to progress quickly – within Carbon Gap and within the CDR/ climate sector more broadly – and take on ever greater levels of responsibility and ownership
  • In terms of hard skills, basic numerical analysis (in Excel) and clear, concise written communication (ideally across both slides and longer-form content) will be needed, while competency in more advanced financial analysis would be a plus
  • Experience or expertise in CDR/ climate is not a pre-requisite but some evidence of enthusiasm/ passion for the topic is beneficial
What we offer
  • A mission-driven role with meaningful responsibility and scope for significant visibility in a high-impact policy space
  • Competitive compensation (details shared during the process)
  • Hybrid working arrangements, with access to our office in Spitalfields, London
  • Strong professional development support, including a (very) generous personal learning and development budget as well as centralised training
  • Regular team offsites and retreats throughout the year
  • A monthly £100 contribution towards a health benefit of your choosing (e.g. gym membership, health insurance, etc)
  • Access to a deep network right across the CDR and climate ecosystem, and opportunities to build out your own
  • Opportunities for rapid internal progression
